Cold Cold Heart Tami Hoag Books
I normally love Tami Hoag. I think she is a gifted writer, and her stories are generally riveting. That being said, this one missed the mark completely for me. It is primarily an ode to TBI and the many ramifications people must deal with in the aftermath of such an injury. While I am not unsympathetic to the plight of those with TBI, I did not enjoy reading a mystery/suspense novel that harped on this issue more than it focused on the actual mystery. I felt more like I was reading some drippy "chick flick" type of story (full disclosure here. . .I'm a woman and I hate that type of movie, book, or whatever). If you've ever read any of Ms. Hoag's other books, you'll know what I mean as soon as you're a few chapters in.Luckily, I got this book when it was available for a bargain rate one day, so I don't feel completely cheated. Still, it's disappointing to sit down expecting a certain caliber of work from an author only to be massively disappointed. I have read Tami Hoag books that I simply didn't want to put down because they were so engrossing, but this one isn't in that category.

Cold Cold Heart Tami Hoag Books Reviews
I found Cold Cold Heart to be fascinating, not so much for the mystery, but for the contrast between two victims of traumatic brain injury trying to fight their way back to normalcy.
Dana Nolan was just starting her career as a newscaster when she was kidnapped and tortured by a serial killer. After killing her kidnapper, Dana returns to her parents' home in Indiana to try to rebuild her life. Not only does she bear the physical scars from her attacker on her face and body, but she suffered traumatic brain injury. Not only does she not remember anything about her kidnapping, her memory of her life before her kidnapping is shaky, her short term memory is affected and her personality has changed.
While Dana is dealing with the repercussions of her brain injury, she is also renewing acquaintance with her former high school boyfriend, Tim, and her friend's former boyfriend, John. Tim left a promising career at West Point and came back to his hometown to become a police officer, inspired, he tells Dana, by the disappearance of Casey, who was Dana's best friend. John, a military veteran, who also has a traumatic brain injury, was the chief suspect in Casey's disappearance. Dana becomes interested in the unsolved mystery about Casey, especially when some suggest that the same serial killer who kidnapped Dana my have been responsible for Casey's disappearance.
While Dana is surrounded by a supportive family who have the financial resources to provide treatment for her and who try to help her overcome the challenges of her brain injury, John, whose mother abandoned him and his father when he was a young boy, has no support system. His father is abusive; he is unable to find or keep a job, and he cannot afford treatment.
I can't say that I was surprised by the identity of the killer, but, as I said, that was not what kept me reading this book. Hoag does a good job of describing the world of the TBI and PTSD survivors. I'd love to revisit these characters in about a year and see how they have continued to grow.
Hoga tells the frightening story of a woman kidnapped, raped, and tortured who kills her abuser to escape. Alive, she has haunting nightmares but no memory of her attacker. Her body and brain do carry that memory as she tries to rebuild her life with severe brain injuries, ptsd, and disfigurement. As she tries to discover the truth about her best friend's disappearance years ago, she puts herself in danger once again. Readers are in for some shocks and misdirection until the painful climax. Well done!
Dana Nolan is a character from 9th victim. This book is about her recovery efforts from severe brain injury and trauma inflicted on her by a serial killer. I lost a night's sleep tonight but it was so worth it. Reading this you feel her fear, confusion and inability to think thing through rationally. However, as she tries to cope with her recovery the memory of her best friend missing for 7years becomes a guiding force in trying to find her way back. In an equally compelling storyline is the boyfriend everyone thought killed Casey. John has returned with PTSD and his own brain injury from 2 wars. Mix in Dana's boyfriend from high school and now a local deputy. Share her battles to hide her scared face, her fight to be treated normal and her terror as she struggles to remember her past while not losing herself. Great read
It was an ok book, not one of her best. I loved the characters and the PTSD storyline but it was allowed to take over the story and she started to repeat herself in trying to keep the disability in the forefront of the readers mind. This made the story line a bit weak. I was able to figure out the whodunit very quickly.
I wish I could give this book 10 stars! I've read many of Tami Hoag's books and I enjoyed them all, but this has to be the best book of fiction I ever read, not because of the plot so much. Many books of a similar venue have written by authors every bit as good. I'm sorry if that disappoints you but you already know it's true. What makes this one stand out above the rest is, I could almost feel Dana's emotions. I had to keep reminding myself I was reading a book, and not actually experiencing it. You did a great job of bringing Dana to life as a 3 dimensional person. Warning if you're an empath take heed. This book will make you feel like you're living it. Excellent book
