This story moves fast, there is so much crammed into a few days that it overwhelms the reader at times. MJ is a protector who mistakes Madison (Maddy) for the charge he is to protect from a demon; they look almost identical. When he finds out that she is not who he suppose to protect, he wants to know why his abilities don’t work with her and he realizes that these differences could mean that she is evil and that he will have to destroy her. It was hilarious reading about an angel doing research on modern dating techniques and reading “Dating for Dummies” as he tries to learn more about her.Since this is a YA novel we have a case of insta-love and a heroine who feels that she is broken and unlovable. Her insecurities have made i where she doesn’t let anyone get close to her. Even though Kelli and a few others have been her friends forever she hides much of herself from her friends and her family; she cannot say “I love you.” Then we have the creep Justin who is a demon and has his sights set on Maddy because of the many differences that make her so unique. He has the ability to control both humans and objects and he delights in tormenting Maddy using his abilities in her friends and family to get he to do what he wants.
The story was entertaining and it moved fast, a little to fast as I mentioned before. I especially enjoyed the information contained in Justin’s chapter; it was different and made me want to make sure that Maddy is not left in limbo if she dies. Maddy is so insecure that she almost her own worst enemy; she’s constantly putting herself at risk and she her lack of trust makes it nearly impossible for those trying to protect her to do so. She keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over.
Overall, I did enjoy the storyline although many of the questions I had were not answered in this book and I look forward to reading Ignited.

Unclaimed Laurie Wetzel Books Reviews
.... Well, aren't you just a contradictory surprise.
I absolutely love this book and hate it all at the same time.
The Love
The storyline is fresh and original which is pretty hard to do in the 'angels and demons' genre. The author has a very good writing style and the plot flows effortlessly. It has just enough suspense and just enough hints left at the end of the book to make me want more.
The hate
Honestly, I really don't like the characters all that much. Which is pretty crucial to liking any book, if you ask me. I just don't like how Madison is portrayed as 'broken' just because she's adopted. And oh my MJ. What a stereotype. Ugh. Honestly, my favorite character is the villain, Justin! I guess I just have hope it gets better with them because I really enjoy the story.
I saw a photo of the cover of this book in a FB group post by someone crowing that they’d bought a copy. It’s gorgeous. I had to see what it was about, so I tracked it down and read the description. Had to buy it. Glad I did.
What a wonderful read! And, brilliantly titled. It’s a gripping, yet thoughtful adventure that held me from beginning to end (which I reached manymany hours past any reasonable bedtime). I want to write an eloquent review to encourage others to read this book, but I’m a little loss for words. The characters, settings, tone, descriptions, pacing ... all of it; perfectly crafted and well-balanced.
This is one of those books whose spell doesn’t wear off right away. It left me wrapped in a warm state of contentment and with a slightly goofy smile every time I think of it, savouring the memory of the story like my favourite tea. It’s one of those tales that, as a teenager, I’d spend weeks daydreaming about, drawing pictures of, and writing my own stories inspired by the characters and events. So, yeah – the teenage me would be in total fandom (which is something I very rarely did). The adult me, wants to shake the author’s hand and say, “Thank you.”
I actually bought this book because I signed up to read the second book in this series and found that there was just too much I was missing to really lose myself in the story. This first book was a fun read. The story isn't too unique. There are several books, especially lately, that fall in to the paranormal romance genre. Vampire, werewolves, angles. There is only so much an author can do to make the story unique when writing in this genre. That being said I have to admit that I am a sucker for these stories and even though this story isn't unique it is still a great read.
I loved most of the characters. They were very relatable. My favorite is definitely MJ. What girl isn't a sucker for an amazing guy? Especially one that always knows the right things to say and continually saves the love of his life. Despite liking the characters I did have a bit of a hard time dealing with Maddy. She is always down on herself and always thinks the worst. I understand teen angst, I really do, but hers was a bit over the top. She finds a great guy...she hates on herself, she finds out she is special...she hates on herself, etc. The only time she isn't hating on herself is when she is physically touching MJ because he has the power to fill her with peace, but the second he lets go the self hate begins again. While I get the need for it as part of the plot (don't want to give away too much) but I just wish that Maddy wasn't so negative. Maybe once I read book two I will understand a little better and it won't bug me as much.
The author does a great job with building the mystery around Maddy. She has several protectors that keep an eye on her and try to hide her from both Heaven and Hell. Both sides would love to control her powers. What are you supposed to do when both sides will do her harm? I love that the side that is supposed to be inherently good isn't able to be trusted. After all Lucifer began in Heaven only to fall because of his desires. What is to stop others from following in his footsteps? Luckily Maddy is unknowingly surrounded by beings trying to protect her, even if they aren't traditionally the 'good guys'. The problem is that there are always questions surrounding the motives of these protectors. Hopefully they are just wanting to be there for Maddy and hopefully the second book will answers these and many other questions.
