I have read quite a number of RJ Ellory's books and enjoyed them to a greater or lesser extent. I was very impressed with "A Quiet Belief in Angels" though disappointed in the end. I have always felt, though, that as an author, Ellory is somewhat over wordy and have felt his books would have benefitted from the services of a good editor, never more so than with "Carnival of Shadows". For me, this was a completely self-indulgent piece of pseudo-intellectual meandering, covering the same ground over and over and over again. From very early in I didn't care who had done what or why - and by the end I was really none-the-wiser in this tale of conspiracy theory. If this is your first taste of Ellory, or even if you are a fan, save yourself the time and just don't bother.

Carnival of Shadows R J Ellory 9781409124207 Books Reviews
Carnival of Shadows is well-written, and importantly for an Ellory novel, not over-written. He has a tendency to go on and on with descriptiveness, but not here. This is a very political book, taking a conservative, almost mindless FBI agent and dissecting him to a point where his existing persona is essentially shredded and he comes around to the author's point of view. It's a very anti-government novel, but is well told. We would like to think that we know ourselves, but sometimes the restrictions experience has unwittingly given us, prevent us from opening up to new ideas, new people, places and things. For most of this, I was on the same page with the author, but he did go awfully far in labeling most institutions, not to mention the FBI, as corrupt. I am not that cynical, yet not blind to the transgressions government makes in order to "keep us free."
I have read all of RJE books and treasure his writing and his characters. This storyline fell apart---for me--toward the end of the book. Also, I found many repetitious dialogues between characters. Each chapter seemed to be heading toward a wonderful suspense that ultimately fell flat when all was revealed. My anticipation of learning the "truth" that was the primary interest between two of the leading characters was ultimately, not worth the wait. I usually embrace RJE books (literally) when I have finished reading them but this one I just closed with a sigh because there was no real thrill at the end. I have rated all of his books with 5 stars--but this one was a disappointment primarily because the "mystery man" remained a mystery man with a lost thread that sort of evaporated. Maybe he will appear in the next book--
Absolutely loved it! Have been a fan of RJ Ellory since the start and this is one of his best ones yet. Stays in your mind long after you have turned the last page...
As an astonishing master of writing as ever. I enjoyed every single line. Well developed characters, all-too-beliveable atmosphere, keeps you glued till dawn. You just cannot stop it. Waiting for more.
Ellory at his best. Lots of detail that really helps you to know the characters. hard to put down
The family background of Travis is very good and well integrated into the story. Ellory's writing is always good and this is no exception. The relation Travis Rourke leaves the reader "en attenuate." A good read.
Carnival of Shadows of itself is a novel and a mystery of two halves. Beautifully written by R.J. Ellory, it speaks of society as it was in the time span in which it is written. Family horror, personal fear, and the many questions about law and order ask questions of the reader. It is not easy going but worth every minute.
